Malaysian numbers come in two lengths, 10 and 11 digits — settle that first, then screen WhatsApp, which is close to universal here.
Mobile number format
Malaysian mobiles all start 01, but the length splits: 012, 013 and 016–019 numbers are 10 digits nationally while the 011 range is 11. After stripping the 0 for +60 that becomes 9 or 10 digits. Assuming one length is the classic mistake on Malaysian data.

Scheduling needs care too: Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Johor observe a Friday–Saturday weekend, and a Monday-to-Friday cadence quietly misses their active hours.

Validate against both length rules before anything else, then resolve carrier live rather than from a prefix table the merger has invalidated. Screen WhatsApp registration as the main filter, and run Telegram as a separate pass — it adds more incremental reach here than in neighbouring markets. Add Shopee and TikTok for commerce lists.

Can a Malaysian prefix still identify the carrier?
Not much any more. Celcom and Digi merged into CelcomDigi in 2022, putting ranges that belonged to two networks under one operator, and portability blurs the rest. Legacy prefix tables are widely wrong, so the only accurate route is a live per-number lookup.
WhatsApp or Telegram in Malaysia?
WhatsApp is the default and has the widest reach, but Telegram is noticeably more established in Malaysia than across most of the region, with heavy channel and group use.
