Thailand number screening

Thailand is LINE's second home market — LINE registration is the primary reachability signal, ahead of SMS.

Mobile number format

Thai mobile numbers are 10 digits nationally with a leading 0 — nine once you strip it for +66 — and sit in the 06x, 08x and 09x ranges. Landlines are only nine digits nationally, so length alone separates the two in a mixed file.

Main carriers

  • AIS
  • TrueMove H
  • dtac
  • NT

AIS and the True group — dtac was folded in during 2023 — form a duopoly, with state-owned NT a small third. Number portability opened early here and gets used heavily, so prefix lookup tables are long since unreliable and carrier has to be resolved per number.

On the ground

Many Thai mobile numbers double as PromptPay payment IDs, which makes them sticky — people change numbers reluctantly, so a validated Thai list ages slowly. Timing matters more than in neighbouring markets: business effectively stops around Songkran in mid-April, and anything sent into that window goes unread.

Screening guidance

Start with validity and a live carrier lookup, since portability has killed prefix tables. Then treat LINE registration as your primary filter — that hit rate is close to your real reachable base in Thailand. Add TikTok, Shopee, Facebook and Instagram for commerce campaigns, and keep finance-oriented lists such as Vantage on a separate track.

Key platforms in Thailand

Thailand is LINE's biggest market outside Japan: merchants run support and promotions through LINE Official Accounts, and communities live in LINE groups. Facebook live selling and comment-to-order social commerce are equally mature, Shopee closes the sale, and WhatsApp stays confined to niche circles.

FAQ

How many digits is a Thai mobile number?

Ten digits nationally with a leading 0, typically starting 06, 08 or 09. Strip the 0, add +66 and you get nine digits. Thai landlines are nine digits nationally — one shorter than mobiles — so sorting a mixed file by length is enough to split mobile from fixed line before you spend anything on screening.

Is LINE or WhatsApp used in Thailand?

LINE, by a wide margin. Thailand is LINE's largest market outside Japan, and merchant support, promotions and community groups all run on it. WhatsApp shows up mostly among expatriates and export-facing firms. For Thai numbers, LINE registration and activity are the better proxy for how many people you can actually reach.

Can you tell the carrier from a Thai prefix?

Not reliably. Portability opened early in Thailand and is widely used, so AIS, True and dtac subscribers are mixed together inside the same prefixes and any static table drifts out of date. Carrier has to be queried live per number, which is how NexCheck resolves it alongside line validity.
