Morocco number screening

A French- and Darija-speaking market with two front doors, WhatsApp and Facebook, where cash on delivery still closes most orders.

Mobile number format

National format is 10 digits with a leading 0. Mobile lives in the 06 and 07 blocks while 05 is fixed-line; internationally that is +212 plus 9 digits. The 07 block opened once 06 ran short, so both are ordinary mobile numbers.

Main carriers

  • Maroc Telecom (IAM)
  • Orange Morocco
  • Inwi

All three operators draw from the same 06 and 07 blocks, and portability since 2007 scrambled whatever early split existed. A Moroccan prefix will not tell you the network, so carrier-based routing needs a live per-number lookup.

On the ground

Online retail still leans on cash on delivery, card payment share is low, and refusal and return costs need to be priced into the average order up front. Morocco also runs on UTC+1 year-round but shifts back to UTC+0 for the whole of Ramadan, so that month needs its own contact schedule.

Screening guidance

Screen WhatsApp registration and activity in round one, add Facebook in round two, and those two layers cover almost everyone reachable. Pushing Telegram and X to the end, or skipping them, saves most of the budget. Prepare French copy, and keep Darija in both Arabic script and Latin transliteration.

Key platforms in Morocco

WhatsApp reach is close to universal, and merchants use it as both help desk and order desk. What sets Morocco apart is that Facebook still performs: resale and local group buying continue to close inside Messenger, which is rare elsewhere. Telegram and X reach too narrow an audience to lead with.

FAQ

How many digits is a Moroccan phone number?

Ten digits nationally with a leading 0, with mobile in the 06 and 07 blocks - for example 0661 234567. Internationally you drop the 0, leaving +212 plus nine digits. Numbers starting 05 are fixed lines, which lets you strip a batch of non-mobiles before screening.

What is the difference between 06 and 07 numbers in Morocco?

None that matters: both are mobile. 06 came first and 07 opened once the older block ran short, and all three operators draw numbers from it. So a 07 number is not an anomaly, and the first two digits will not tell you which operator holds the line.

Do Moroccan customers use WhatsApp or Telegram?

WhatsApp, by a wide margin. Everyday contact and merchant enquiries almost all happen there, while Telegram stays inside small circles. Run WhatsApp first and Facebook second, and those two platforms will cover most of the people you can actually reach.
