RCS number screening

The carrier-level successor to SMS. Nothing to install — whether a number can receive it depends on the handset, the carrier and the messaging app all lining up.

Coverage

  • India
  • United States
  • Brazil
  • Mexico
  • France
  • Japan

RCS is pushed by carriers and handset makers, so coverage follows networks rather than app installs. India's major operators turned it into a primary business messaging channel, brand SMS in the US, Brazil and Mexico keeps migrating over, and Japan's +Message runs on the same standard.

Platform characteristics

  • There is no separate account — the phone number is the identity. Receiving depends on the handset, the carrier and the messaging app all supporting it at once.
  • Google Messages carries the Android side; iOS only gained support in iOS 18, and the feature sets differ, which is why platform has to be resolved before a campaign.
  • On the brand side there is a verified sender profile (name, logo, verification badge) plus rich cards, buttons and delivery and read receipts — none of which plain SMS has.
  • Unsupported numbers fall back to ordinary SMS, losing cards and buttons entirely, and billing changes with it.

What screening solves here

The costly failure in RCS campaigns is unsupported numbers hiding in the list: once a message falls back to SMS, the rich card and buttons are gone and billing changes. The three filters map to the three pre-send decisions — resolve OS type, pull the Android segment when the creative needs it, then confirm RCS is genuinely available.

FAQ

How do I know whether a list of numbers can receive RCS?

Run the batch through the RCS capability filter and each number comes back with its current ability to receive. Capability is set jointly by handset, carrier and messaging app, and results swing widely across countries and operators, so screen close to send time.

Why split Android and iOS before an RCS campaign?

The two sides arrived at different times with different feature sets. Android has run on Google Messages far longer and renders the fullest experience, while iOS only joined at iOS 18, so the same rich template can land differently. That is what the Android-only filter is for — isolating Android numbers for a dedicated send.

How does RCS differ from ordinary SMS blasting?

SMS is plain text with a link, from a sender that shows as a bare number. RCS shows a verified brand name and logo, supports image cards and buttons, and returns delivery and read receipts. The trade-off is coverage: unsupported numbers fall back to SMS, so the list has to be screened first.
